   History is all over the place in New Jersey.    My niece hasn’t responded since September, despite me using three different mediums (SMS, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger). Today I threw my hands up and bought my niece’s partner an Xbox gift card (which I think is what he asked for last year) and my nephew and partner a gift card where they can choose their own experience. Hopefully they can sell the gift cards if they wouldn’t use them. I was hoping to get them something more personal, but hell, I’ve been asking for ideas for three months. With a week to go till Christmas – we’re going down on the 19th – I was getting desperate. Aside from that, this year has been…strange.    First ask your parents if they need any help with anything (chores, dishes, running errands, etc.). Then make sure your room and bathroom are tidy and that none of your belongings are scattered around the house. Now, take a bath if you do that at night, get dressed for bed and brush your teeth and get out the Bible andread the Christmas story. (My favorite one is the first 2 chapters of Luke in the New Testament). This would be awesome to do with your family. Now say a prayer with your family, give each person a hug and go to bed. Now it gets harder! Close your eyes and try to remem ber everything you can about the Christmas story in the Bible and about Christmases in the past. Remember gifts you gave, food you ate, carols you sang, everything you can remember. If you are still awake, say your own silent prayer and ask God to help you relax and fall asleep.    I really like salt cod, baccalà in Italian. There is an easy and delicious Portuguese recipe Bacalhao a Gomes de Sá (you simmer the  2023 Division I Championship Troy Baseball shirt  and then bake it in a casserole with potatoes and onions). Or you could make a spread like the French brandade de morue. Fishcakes are another dish in which you can use multiple kinds of seafood – you can use any crabcakes recipe you like but mix in some cooked white fish or canned clams. Canned salmon works well for this. Make sure to use lots of Italian parsley in the mix. Don’t forget the Italian Strongman, Mussels Marinara. Just steam mussels in your favorite tomato sauce. I prefer ceviche to Italian crudo, YMMV. But it’s easy to make with just about any kind of seafood. Grilled or stuffed squid is delicious, as is grilled octopus (you make have tyo simmer the octopus for a couple of hours to tenderize it first. If you find baby octopus, grab them and grill them.    I never spent much on a Christmas Eve meal when my children were still young because they’d be too excited and antsy to care what we had. I saved the  Denver Nuggets Basketball Mile High City Champions 2023 shirt  for a wonderful Christmas day early evening meal with special things we all loved. By that time presents had been opened, toys played with, etc. I’d frequently make a good prime rib, twice baked potatoes, trifle with jello and lots of coolwhip, fancy butter gem rolls and of course a champagne toast, grape juice when the kids were under 10 y.o. I also made a nice make ahead dessert from the frozen chocolate jellyroll cake that I’d cover with semi-melted vanilla ice cream and decorated so it looked like a yule log. We of course always had Christmas crackers so we all got a really bad joke, a small (very small) toy and our tissue paper crowns. Good times.
